Regulatory Body

Intellectual Property Department under the Ministry of Economy and Commerce is the governing body for Trademark Registration in Qatar.

Legal framework

As of August 10, 2023, Qatar has implemented the GCC Trademark Laws and its implementing regulations, as stated in Ministerial Decree No. 56 of 2023. This replaces the previous Trademark Law (Law No. 9 of 2022).

Classification of Goods and Services: 11th Edition of Nice Classification (NCL).

Opposition Period: 60 days from the publication date. Extension of the opposition period is not possible.

Protection Period: 10 Years.

Renewal: A registered mark is renewable for successive periods of 10 years within the last year of protection.

Grace Period for Renewal: A grace period of 6 months is allowed for the renewal with a lateness fine following the expiry of the registration period.

Use of trademarks: It is not compulsory for registration or maintaining the registration in force. However, mark is vulnerable to cancellation action by any interested party if the mark has not been used for five (5) consecutive years after registration.

Mandatory Documentation

TM Registration
  1. A Power of Attorney filled with the full name and address of the applicant, duly notarized and legalized up to the Qatari Consulate.
  2. A simple copy of the Certificate of Incorporation, or Business License, or an extract of the commercial register along with Arabic translation. If the applicant is an Individual, a passport copy of the applicant is required.
  3. List of goods/services to be covered by the application.
  4. Soft copy of the trademark.
  5. In case of claiming priority, a certified copy of the priority application.
TM Renewal
  1. A Power of Attorney notarized and legalized up to the Qatari Consulate.
  2. A scanned copy of the registration certificate.
Recordal of Assignment/Merger/License Agreement
  1. A Deed of Assignment/merger document/License agreement legalized up to the Qatari Consulate.
  2. A Power of Attorney executed by the Assignee notarized and legalized up to the Qatari Consulate.
  3. Copy of the Registration Certificate for the purpose of endorsement.
  4. Copy of Certificate of Incorporation, or Business License, or an extract of the commercial register.
Name Change/Address Change Recordal
  1. A Power of Attorney showing the new name and/or address duly notarized and legalized up to the Qatari Consulate.
  2. Certificate of change of name/address (which is applicable) legalized up to the Qatari Consulate.
  3. Original Registration Certificate for the purpose of endorsement.
